No more meetings?

Well, after a great start interest suddenly died in the group, so we haven’t arranged any further meetings at the moment. Perhaps we will give it another go in the future, but not right now. Meantime we’re still going strong with the Edinburgh SF Book Group (we did the graphic novel Black Hole by Charles Burns last month) and the next meeting will be on Tuesday May1st where we will be discussing the fantastic fantasy romp (and novel debut) by Scott Lynch, the Lies of Locke Lamora; regular meeting details can be found on the book group’s blog.

Coffee & Comics’ big brother, the Edinburgh SF Book Group, will meet on Tuesday 27th of February from 6 to 7pm in Henderson’s on Hanover Street; the book being discussed this month will be Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World.

After an enjoyable first meeting tonight we’ve picked a graphic novel and date for the next bash. The second meeting of Coffee & Comics will be on Tuesday 13th of February from 6 to 7pm in the Biblos cafe-bar on the corner of Chambers Street and Southbridge, close to the Edinburgh Forbidden Planet and Blackwell’s bookstore. The book under discussion will be the Pulitzer prize-winning work by Art Spiegelman, Maus, one of those comics which has crossed the genre boundaries to be read as much by non-comics readers as much as it is by the comics fraternity. As always, everyone is welcome to come along and join in.

Coffee and Comics is an offshoot from the Edinburgh SF Book Group, concentrating on discussing good graphic novels. As with the SF Book Group we aim to meet from 6 to 7pm once a month (usually the middle Tuesday of the month) in a cafe where we can kick back with a beverage and talk about good comics work. The book under discussion for this first meeting will be the recent and highly acclaimed Pride of Baghdad written by Brian K Vaughan and illustrated by Niko Henrichon. Taking a different angle on recent events in Iraq the book is based on a true story of a pride of lions who escaped Baghdad Zoo after it was bombed by American planes, exploring the nature – and cost – of freedom almost in the form of a fable for adults. It is a standalone work and if you are not used to graphic novels and comics it is a very accessible work for you to start off with, so why not come along and give it a try? The first meeting will be on Tuesday 16th of January at 6pm in Biblos Cafe-bar on the corner of Chambers Street and Southbridge.
